St. Brigid (or Bridget) is often called "Mary of the Gael." The image of this cross is that of rushes which, according to legend, Brigid used to explain the story of Christ to a dying pagan king. Stories about St Brigid differ, but all allude to the fact that she is a powerful saint. She is said to be the patron saint of home and hearth.
